Zillow has 68 homes for sale in Pagosa Springs CO matching Wolf Creek Ski. Everyone in our group wound up swamped at some point. Snowboards grind to a halt on anything but the steeper terrain. Skiing in 2.5 feet of fresh snow is hard. As the snow starts to fall, Pagosa Springs transforms into a winter wonderland. It was a weekday but on such days, who in nearby Alamosa would go to work? Just getting there on dicey roads was a challenge, but that was nothing compared to what awaited us. Wolf Creek Ski Area is a high alpine ski resort: sunscreen and sunglasses are necessary. If you love deep powder, then you’ll love Wolf Creek. For tree lovers, two-thirds of the mountain consists of skiable forests. Or hike the Knife Ridge for an insane chute run. Skiers can take the 25-minute hike up Alberta Peak for a bucket-list plunge down its steep face. The area has its share of blue and green runs, but it’s the more inaccessible stuff that makes it legendary. Lift tickets are among the cheapest in Colorado, and several times a year the mountain holds Local Appreciation Days, with half-priced tickets. The proposed development would forever change the unique, small remote Wolf Creek Ski Area. When the storm cycle really gets going, skiers from around Colorado leave their home mountains to flock here. Wolf Creek Pass is a vital Colorado ecosystem. It’s stress-free powder, enough of it that fresh tracks can be found two days after a storm if you know where to look. Through a combination of geography and meteorology, the ski area gets huge dumps when storms thick with moisture come out of the Southwest. It’s the powder-an average of 450 inches a year-that makes it a gem. This southern Colorado resort is in a class of its own, not for the terrain (though it offers some of the best hike-to runs in Colorado). There are Colorado ski areas, and then there is Wolf Creek. Too much work to get out of runs, and if you don't hike the ridge it wouldn't be worth it IMHO.Hiking Mountain-biking Running Sightseeing Skiing-snowboarding Snowshoeing Wildlife Skiing-and-snowboarding Cat tracks should now go uphill, and several here do. Great snow, some great terrain, but overall lacking in a consistent vert and steep pitch to keep you smiling from top to bottom, the smile fades the further down the hill you go (unless you drop into the Waterfall area, but then it fades quickly as you hike/skate out of a hole). The Waterfall area is below the rim and has some great features but again, you will be skating or hiking out. ![]() ![]() Areas of smoke and a chance of rain before 3pm, then areas of smoke and a chance of showers and thunderstorms. 20 Minute drive to the Wolf Creek Ski Area. The glades below the rim can be fun if you keep your speed up, but considering they get the killer POW often you really have to work it, and there is no getting around the 'flat-tracks' to get you back to the lift. Our hotel in South Fork, Colorado brings the outdoors right to you with an onsite bar, cafe, beer garden, easy access to the slopes, & much more. Not such a big deal for skiers but boarders are constantly skating to make it back to the lift. But after the first 600-800 vertical feet, it becomes quite shallow in pitch and there are tons of holes or "flat-tracks". The top of the entire mountain is a great playground with easy hikes to sick terrain, anything from steep glades to fun cornices to gnarly cliff hucks. Rode Wolfy (Wolf Creek Ski Area) w/ 24"+ and the snow was gorgeous: light, deep, and fun. ![]()
